Dude, Where’d My Weekend Go?

I arrived extremely late to work today (Monday). Why? Well, yes, I was being lazy about getting up, but it might also be related to the fact that I am way off schedule. The weekend started out well. Friday night we got together with a cookout with some of our neighbors and had a great time. Saturday morning I woke up and went mountain biking with some of my neighbors. Despite a total flip wipe-out crash and being really, really sore, things were still okay. But Grayson started running a fever on Saturday afternoon. Then later Saturday (when it was too late to go to a doctor’s office), he was crying from the pain of an ear infection. Unfortunately, the numbing drops weren’t helping and he was also starting with some severe stomach pain. His fever couldn’t be controlled by Tylenol and he wouldn’t eat or drink anything (and of course that meant ketones).

I was convinced it was just an ear infection so we called the “On Call” doctor from our local doctor’s office. The doctor had never seen Grayson before and as soon as he heard that he was Type 1, didn’t seem to want to prescribe or recommend anything other than having him seen. Initially we were going to wait until Sunday morning, but a little after midnight, Grayson was screaming to go to the “Emergency Doctor”. So we loaded up and headed up to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital (passing Williamson on the way). The choice of that particular ER was a good one. We were seen immediately and they were thorough and careful. After a few hours of tests, x-rays, IV fluids, ibuprofen, and antibiotics, Grayson was in much better shape (although tired). So at 5 a.m., we finally headed home for some much needed rest. The only thing I remember doing on Sunday was Grayson and I watching the basketball game (Florida beat up on Kentucky). That was pretty much it.

I’m so sorry about Grayson. Is he feeling better now?

Those infections are scary things with a T1 child.

Yep, he’s doing very well. It seemed to leave him almost as fast as it came on. It was just frightening at the time.

He couldn’t wait to get back to school with his friends.
