A Strobist Christmas and Hooray for Dollywood
Thanks in part to our neighbor, Becky and I both discovered just how much we liked the idea of having some studio lights. I got the chance to use some lights and a backdrop and within a matter of minutes I had managed this pretty amazing shot of Grayson. After that, it was only a matter of time before I started accumulating some lighting equipment. But instead of going with traditional studio lights, I went portable and very closely followed the advice set forth in The Strobist. Unfortunately, because of the popularity of his recommendations, I had some trouble tracking down some of the pieces and more than that, I ended up paying quite a bit more than when the article was written (eBay). But already, I’ve gotten results that I am very happy with (the cookie picture was done using a single light on a stand with an umbrella).
Christmas was really good. Grayson is really into Star Wars right now and so pretty much everything was tied into Star Wars with a few other things thrown in. Meanwhile, we thanked the Lord for the rain on Christmas day so that his friends couldn’t show off their new electric scooters. We knew it would be an issue once he saw them.
The day after Christmas we headed out to Dollywood. We’ve been fans of Dolly and Dollywood since our honeymoon in 1995. So it’s always fun to get to go back.
Becky’s cousin Leslie and Leslie’s husband Jacob are both on staff so we decided it would be cool to pay them a visit. Leslie is the stage manager for one of their Christmas productions. Plus, Dollywood is just generally decked out with lights anyway. And we also knew Grayson would love getting to do some of the rides there.
Despite the cold temperatures, we’re pretty sure he would have stayed out there until well past some frostbite. Another major accomplishment for this trip was that it was the first time we can recall having such good numbers for nearly an entire trip. We had no site or pump problems and his blood sugar stayed in the normal range better than even normal (let alone for a trip with lots of car ride time).
So with the diabetes under control, it meant something had to go wrong and honestly, very little did. The only issue we initially had was Grayson not wanting to leave home. I think part of it was the toys from Christmas but also part of it was that he really, really likes to sleep in his bed and really likes home (which I guess is a good thing). But the whole way out there we had to hear about how he didn’t want to stay in a hotel and he wanted to sleep at home. On the way back home, we just got asked about when we go back to Dollywood and when we could see Leslie, Jacob and little Ben. I guess that’s the sign of a really great and some great memories.

I’m so glad you had fun and that Grayson’s numbers were good.
And, Riley loves staying at hotels. He would stay in one every night if we let him.
