American Idol — Okay, I Admit I Watch It!

Like any good American, I now watch American Idol. But I am particularly interested in seeing how well Elliott Yamin does. Based on those questions and answers you can see he is a type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump. Then, based on this past week’s post-performance interview, it turns out he’s 90% deaf in one ear due to repeated ear infections as a child.  He also (based on his answers bio) has some degree of faith in God. And I have to agree with Simon that Elliott has the best voice of the guys.  What’s also interesting is that another contestant, Kevin Covais, may be diabetic as well since he mentions his biggest challenge in life “dealing with Diabetes”.  Kevin is sort of fun to cheer for because he definitely strikes me as the anti-Idol. Paula Abdul has tried to label him as “the next sex symbol”. For those of us who have never been considered particularly attractive (especially around age 16) for lack of looking buff or properly average, it’s fun to cheer for Kevin because he looks so non-Idol.  But there is something about Kevin’s personality that annoys me.

Elliott has his own “looks” issues as many have described him as “ugly” or “goofy looking”. If either Elliott or Kevin continue to succeed, it’s going to be a testamony to America being willing to look beyond the exterior.  This is in direct contrast to Ace, who I think has “the look”.  He certainly has the hair (which he foolishly covers up sometimes) but I don’t know how much room folks have in their hearts for so much falsetto singing in this post Michael Jackson era. Chris also has “the look” but more for overall appearance since he shaves his head. Taylor is just flat out odd.  Bucky definitely is in trouble because he doesn’t quite have the look and he doesn’t quite have the voice.

Like Randy and others, I was bummed to see Gedeon go.  His quick little “saved by the blood of Jesus” quote, attitude and smile were great.  He has a great voice, so I was troubled to figure out why he didn’t get enough votes.  I guess I am just stunned that Bucky or Kevin would end up with more votes than him.  Oh well, I guess I don’t get it.

Turning to the girls, we are definitely hoping to see Mandisa win.  She’s an outspoken Christian, has a wonderful personality, hails from Tennessee and has the best voice of anyone on the show.  And since she’s overweight, she definitely is not what people would typically choose as an “Idol”.  Therefore, she’s our number one choice.  Go Mandisa!  From her Q&A section:

Who is your AMERICAN IDOL?

An author and speaker named Beth Moore. She inspires me to live more like Jesus and I want to do the same.

Then later on down the page:

Do you have any lucky charms?

No.

Who are your heroes in life?

Jesus is my hero. He saved my life.

What’s been your toughest obstacle in life?

My battle with weight has been the biggest struggle of my life. But I am overcoming day by day and will be victorious.

Do you think the audition process was fair?

I believe it was fair. However, there were some amazing people that were cut early on. I can’t reconcile that in my mind.

If you win, who will you thank first?

Jesus! He’s so good to me.
