And the Sony Saga Continues with More Issues

As it turns out, the ActiveX uninstaller for the Sony CD software may in fact open up even more dangerous holes in your system. Fortunately, when I went to Muzzy’s rather exhaustive analysis of the Sony software and then ran the test, I found that my computer was okay. Nevertheless, I have taken further precautions by manually deleting things recommended and then I will trying out the Microsoft Anti-Spyware software as well since they supposedly working on a removal mechanism that is independent of Sony. Hopefully that will further fix the problem.

The most bizarre turn of events mentioned in the above pages, though, is the very likely LGPL license violation that has been committed with several LGPL software pieces having been distributed with the Sony software (developed by the First 4 Internet company). This could spell more trouble for Sony. Because as one person pointed out commenting on this story on SlashDot that this could be really ironic with the music police (partially funded by Sony BMG) going after grandmothers and such about illegally downloaded music and charging them by the song or occurrance. Imagine if the software police were as hard on Sony as the music police have been on some of these people doing illegal music downloads.

Now it appears that Sony is going to recall the affected CD’s. I’ll be curious to see just how hard it will be to get my replacement Switchfoot CD.
