New Orleans Finger Pointing and Hand Wringing

As folks have pointed fingers (Oprah saying that America owes “these people” an apology, Michael Moore thinking of making a film about Bush’s failures regarding the hurricane, and many many more) at the federal government’s response to the hurricane, I am glad to see that other people are getting a clue about the situation.

This article from Bill Hobbs discusses issues at the mayor’s office and some of the local decisions. Randy Elrod points out that it’s not FEMA’s job or right to call in the National Guard. And finally, Cal Thomas, points out that a formal investigation is less likely to show federal failures as much as it will show issues at a more local level. So while many are quick to blame Bush for something, the real issues are deeper. And for me, that deepest issue is that overall role of government. Are we so dependent as a country on our federal government that we really think they are both the problem here and the solution to this disaster? Cal Thomas and Rush are right on track here:

The worse thing the federal government could do is to increase the size, reach and cost of government. If government failed in its response to the hurricane, the answer is not more inefficient government. The answer is only the amount of government that is needed. Put the rest in private hands.

As for Oprah, I can only say that Americans will do this time what they have always done, give generously. So she can do all the hand-wringing she wants to about the situation, but in the end it will be this country’s true nature and heart that will continue to step in to help folks and not her chastizing words. As for Michael Moore, I am sure he’ll find some way to blame everything on Bush and that this is all one giant conspiracy while the real truth will lie buried in the muck of the Ponchatrain.
