Seminoles Keep Their Name
Thankfully, the NCAA is now allowing FSU to use the Seminole name. In what can only be described as a sudden burst of logic and reason they realized that sometimes the tribes in question are actually in favor of the school using their name.
According to one executive committee member, the NCAA’s recently amended definition, made available for the appeals committee, to specifically consider namesake tribal support. That language apparently was not used during debate before the Aug. 5 decision.
“In terms of establishing criteria and the sovereignty, the respect of the local tribe’s wishes is really, to me, the central point of this discussion,” said Arthur Kirk, president of St. Leo University, a small, Catholic university near Tampa, who voted for the ban.
Duh! At least they finally had some sense. But really, I am still ticked that they waisting all this time and effort on something when there are a ton of important issues that ought to be addressed more than worrying about mascots.
