Supreme Court Shows Its True Color

Anyone who believes the US Supreme Court is dominated by conservatives needs to look at recent rulings. The first big decision announced recently was regarding Eminent Domain and the ability for local governments to seize (with compensation) private property. The big news here is that governments are now given a broader reach with increased tax revenue now being a legitimate excuse for such a practice. I think the interesting point here in the 5-4 decision is that folks in Connecticut are normally very liberal. Much to my dismay (since my great, great,… grandfather was one of Hartford’s 50 founding fathers), Connecticut is one of the most liberal states in the country, and yet here, these residents hopes were hinged on help from more conservative judges. Scalia, Rehnquist, Thomas are the only true conservatives in the high court (some would argue whether Rehnquist was really a true conservative). O’Connor and Kennedy seem to jump sides more often than a kid hopping ropes in double dutch. It’s also worth noting that Souter wouldn’t be there if Bork hadn’t had been “Borked” and represents another of Bush Sr’s failures.

Ultimately what the decision represents is another in a long line of movements towards socialism in America. Socialism is the ultimate end of Liberalism. It’s the whole “Government knows best” mentality here. That line of thinking rules out school choice, fair taxes, free enterprise and trade and instead creates and atmosphere of government dependency, income redistribution (and in this case, land redistribution), and generally a loss of economic freedom.

In other cases recently announced, regarding the Ten Commandments, we definitely see that the court is not conservative. Here Kennedy switches over to the conservative side and O’Conner to the liberal side, 5-4 the liberals take the Ten Commandments out of courthouses (but not their Supreme Court Building since it was an artistic part of a historical display). Fortunately, Breyer switched sides on a similar case and they voted 5-4 to allow a Ten Commandments display outside the Texas state capital. My point here is that if the court was truly dominated by conservatives, these decisions would have gone the other way. This is also why the US Presidential Election is so important. And finally, this is why Supreme Court nominations is a hill worth dying for.
